Site Structure For Blogs Helps Search Engine Positioning

Site structure helps websites position well in the search engine results page. This is a well known fact.  For the webmaster that is making a traditional static website, site structure is fairly straightforward. Decide what the site is about, choose the directory branch hierarchy, narrow down to more specific categories, and then drill down to specific topics.

Site structure for bloggers isn’t quite as straightforward. The blog platform has certain code constraints that make it a little more of a challenge to optimize your site structure. This article is going to focus on optimizing the Wordpress blog platform.

Planning site structure for blogs

The first step to getting the site structure correct for a blog is to figure out what the logical categories will be. The best way to determine a logical category hierarchy is to use the Google Keyword Tool. Enter your keyword, type in the security code, and click “Get Keyword Ideas”. I used dating as my keyword. From there, you have a list of longtail keywords. From there, you should pick keywords that can support many different articles. I would choose online dating, ethnic dating, religious dating, dating services, and dating advice.

Next you need to set-up your blog to accept your site structure hierarchy. First you click on the dash board button in the top left.

Word Press Site Structure Step One

Next you click on Settings. In the Settings tab you need to click on Permalinks.

Word Press Site Structure

The last step is to ensure the radio button, “Custom Structure” is checked. In the User Field next to it, type in ” /%category%/%postname%/ “. Next click the ” Save Changes ” button.
